BVB star Marcel Sabitzer takes surprising ÖFB break

On the training ground of Borussia Dortmund, Marcel Sabitzer, the 32‑year‑old BVB star, stands after an intense discussion with head coach Ralf Rangnick. He announces that he will not be available for the upcoming Nations League phase of the Austrian national team. The decision comes after two years that he describes as very intense.

Break for the national team

Sabitzer will not be available to the Austrian national team in the Nations League. He speaks of a surprising Austrian FA pause that he is taking in agreement with Rangnick. The 102‑cap international has so far scored 27 goals.

Trusting talks with Rangnick

“In trusting and open talks I have agreed with head coach Ralf Rangnick that I will now take a break and we will discuss at the beginning of next year whether I will return to the national team for the EURO qualification,” said Sabitzer. The talks are intended to clarify further involvement in the Euro qualification at the start of next year.

Sabitzer emphasizes that the past two years have been “very intense.” He is aware that he must manage his energy carefully in order to continue playing at the highest level for several more years.

The 32‑year‑old midfielder explains that he wants to play football at the highest level for a few more years and must manage his energy carefully. He has arranged a phased departure to control his own workload.

Rangnick states that he can fully understand the considerations of his key player. He is pleased that Sabitzer will generally be available again if we need him. Rangnick will announce on Monday his squad for the Nations League matches against Israel, Kosovo and Ireland.

Thus it remains open whether Sabitzer will return in January after the break for the EURO qualification. The decision will be made in the coming weeks.
