Brave AZ miss chance, Sunderland claim first European win in 53 years
Bold AZ began the Europa League season without a win. In Sunderland the team of Leeroy Echteld lost 1‑0, despite numerous chances. The match marked the first European confrontation in Sunderland in 53 years. The fans created a highlighted atmosphere action, making the evening feel magical.
First European match in Sunderland
AZ could not turn the opening into a win. The team of coach Leeroy Echteld played at times well and created many chances, but the only goal came from Sunderland. The English club therefore secured a 1‑0 victory.
Before the match the atmosphere action set the tone. In the early minutes AZ did not seem to be overwhelmed by the number seven of England from last season. A mistake by Enzo Le Fee led to a one‑on‑one between Ro‑Zangelo Daal and goalkeeper Robin Roefs, who safely handled the low shot.
After a difficult start Sunderland took control of the match. The Black Cats were repeatedly dangerous, but Jari de Busser made several crucial saves. A shot from Le Fee hit the post, leaving the score at half‑time still 0‑0.
After the break AZ came out of the starting blocks better. A fine move by Kees Smit brought the side close to the lead, but the midfielder shot narrowly wide. The second part of the match proved more open and both teams looked for the counter‑attack.
AZ miss chances, Sunderland book historic victory
A quick counter‑attack by Sunderland forced Enzo Le Fee to shoot at goal. Outside player Wesley Patati tried to prevent this, but caused a penalty. Le Fee, who had missed a penalty against Arsenal on Saturday, this time found the ball behind the bar.
Sunderland later introduced Brian Brobbey, but the biggest chance remained with AZ. Ro‑Zangelo Daal shot from the edge of the sixteen, but the strike went wide. Ten minutes before the end AZ had three attempts: Valdemar Byskov was stopped twice by the defence, Robin Roefs saved a shot from Meerdink, and Brian Brobbey missed a clear chance at 2‑0.
No second goal fell, meaning Sunderland won a European match for the first time in 53 years. AZ missed countless opportunities and a draw was deserved in the second half.
AZ play again on 15 October in the Europa League, this time at home against Hapoel Beër Sjeva.
