Braunschweig celebrate win as Kiel stay winless and Heidenheim draw
Zweite Bundesliga Braunschweig celebrated their first home victory of the season after Jan Urbich’s eleventh‑minute header secured a 1‑0 win over Holstein Kiel in front of 21,010 fans, while Heidenheim and Kaiserslautern were left on a goalless stalemate on the same Ostalb weekend.
Braunschweig end winless run
Jan Urbich gave Eintracht Braunschweig the lead in the eleventh minute when a defensive lapse by Holstein Kiel allowed the 22‑year‑old to head home the ball. The goal broke a sequence of six league matches without a win for the Team. The crowd erupted as the Heimsieg was secured.
Holstein Kiel and coach Tim Walter have been under mounting pressure in the 2. Bundesliga, with the club yet to register a win after seven games. Kiel’s managing director Olaf Rebbe brushed aside speculation about Walter’s job security in a Sky interview, saying, “I think about him every morning when I bring him a coffee.”
A potential early strike in the third minute was ruled out after a VAR review, with Urbich caught offside. Eight minutes later, the same Urbich, now 22, capitalised on a misplaced back‑pass from Kiel defender Ivan Nekic to score the decisive 1‑0.
Braunschweig missed further opportunities when Fabio Di Michele Sanchez in the 47th minute and Aaron Opoku in the 63rd failed to double the lead. Kiel pressed for an equaliser, with Adrian Kapralik producing the best chance in the 73rd minute before his shot was blocked. It was the second Mal the Team celebrated a season win.
Heidenheim and Kaiserslautern share points
On the same Ostalb weekend, 1. FC Heidenheim and 1. FC Kaiserslautern were held to a 0‑0 draw in a tightly contested 2. Bundesliga clash. The result moved the Palatines close to the third‑placed Swabians in the table, narrowing the gap ahead of Saturday. Nach the final whistle, both sides exchanged handshakes.
Kaiserslautern’s Semih Sahin saw a deflected effort hit the crossbar in the ninth minute, while Heidenheim’s Julian Niehues struck a spectacular bicycle kick that rattled the net in the 33rd. Kaiserslautern captain Marlon Ritter saw a free‑kick saved by goalkeeper Thomas Dähne in stoppage time.
Heidenheim defender Patrick Mainka inadvertently kicked opponent Fabian Kunze’s foot in the 30th minute and fell, but the 31‑year‑old recovered to continue playing. Kunze performed in front of 15,000 spectators as the match concluded without a goal.
