Botman faces criticism and support after Newcastle's heavy defeat

Sven Botman delivered a poor performance for Newcastle United on Wednesday evening, a display that coincided with the club’s 4-1 loss to Bristol City. English media made the Dutchman the main target of criticism, yet some outlets also defended his showing.

Newcastle’s defeat came with a sizable margin, as Bristol City scored four goals to Newcastle’s single reply. World Cup players Bruno Guimarães, Joelinton and Dan Burn were not on the pitch, while Sean Steur and Botman featured for the Magpies.

Botman’s moments were described as unconvincing, particularly during the second conceded goal when his positioning appeared weak. Opinions on his performance diverge, with some observers questioning his impact while others note the broader team issues.

The Mag reported that referee Paul Tierney did not award a foul after Botman was pushed in the back by Lorent Tolaj, a view echoed by manager Eddie Howe. Howe added, “It was a strange evening. At the second conceded goal a foul was made on Botman,” in comments to the club’s channels.
