Bohs face European test as Midtjylland dominate at Tallaght
Bohemian FC (Bohs) fell 2-0 to Danish side FC Midtjylland in the first leg of the UEFA Conference League third‑qualifying round at Tallaght Stadium, leaving the Irish club with a steep uphill battle to overturn the deficit in a disappointing display.
Midtjylland arrived in Ireland after being dumped out of Europa League qualifying by Besiktas last week, underscoring their recent involvement in European competition. Bohs reached the third qualifying round thanks to wins over St Joseph's and Ballkani. Manager Alan Reynolds made four changes to the lineup that drew against Galway United, and the starting eleven featured Jordan Flores, Senan Mullen, Ross Tierney and Connor Parsons.
The home side were under severe pressure early, with keeper Paul Walters forced to deny Valdemar Byskov Andreasen’s effort, conceding a corner. Despite the early danger, Bohs created chances, notably when Flores found Tierney inside the visitors’ area, only for the striker’s wild effort to sail wide.
Midtjylland took the lead in the 28th minute when Sofus Johannesen’s right‑wing cross clipped a Bohs defender and fell to Djú Franculino, who calmly rolled the ball into the bottom corner. The goal was met with near silence from the crowd, highlighting the difficulty of breaking the Danish defence.
A penalty awarded to Bohs in the 58th minute for a perceived foul on Tierney was overturned by VAR after an off‑side check. The visitors extended their advantage in the 77th minute after the referee spotted a handball on the edge of the area by Dayle Rooney; Valdemar Byskov Andreasen floated the resulting free‑kick into the top corner, putting the tie beyond Bohs’ reach.
Late attempts from substitute Colm Whelan and a header by Patrick Hickey failed to change the scoreline. The match also saw Cho Gue‑sung listed among Midtjylland’s substitutes.
Now Bohs must regroup for the second leg at the MCH Arena in Herning next week, where they face a huge task to overturn the two‑goal deficit against a side accustomed to European competition.
