Birmingham City face tough choice over Scott Wright's future

Birmingham City face tough choice over Scott Wright's future

At St. Andrew's, the buzz around the training ground centres on a 29‑year‑old winger whose future hangs in the balance. Scott Wright, still on Birmingham City's books, has become the subject of calls for a mutual contract termination as the January window approaches. The club must decide whether to green‑light his exit before his contract runs out in June 2027.

Bethany Patrick’s football governance work

Based in Manchester, United Kingdom, Bethany Patrick focuses on the EFL, with particular interest in football governance, supporter culture and fan experience and access. She is a director of the award‑winning Sheffield Wednesday Women’s Supporters Group, where she drives fan engagement, strategy and campaigns for greater inclusion across the game.

Patrick regularly represents supporters in governance spaces across Europe, taking part in government panels and discussions about football regulation and the supporter’s voice. She has previously worked as a researcher for The Stretford Paddock and contributes regularly to The Wednesday Week.

Scott Wright’s troubled Birmingham spell

Wright arrived from Rangers in August 2024 for a reported £300,000 fee and marked his debut with a stoppage‑time winner against Wigan Athletic. Injuries quickly curtailed his progress, most notably a serious knee injury sustained against Reading in February 2025 that ruled him out for the remainder of Birmingham's record‑breaking League One campaign.

A subsequent loan to Dundee offered little chance to rebuild momentum. In total, Wright has made 24 appearances for the Blues, scoring three goals and providing two assists. He was omitted from the original 25‑man Championship squad, only to be reinstated after Kanya Fujimoto’s loan departure, yet his prospects remain limited.

His sole senior appearance this season came as a substitute in the Carabao Cup victory over Swansea City, and he logged 63 minutes with the U21 side against Sutton United in the National League Cup.

Options and next steps for the winger

’s Blues fan pundit Jason Moore said he is “astounded no one has taken him, because even at low‑end Scottish level, he’d probably do a job,” adding that Wright is not good enough for the Championship. Moore suggested a January departure is necessary, with mutual termination as a fallback if no transfer materialises.

Wright’s contract runs until June 2027, meaning Birmingham could recoup part of their initial outlay before losing him for free. Knighthead Capital Management continues to back manager Chris Davies’ ambition to take the club into the Premier League, implying that difficult decisions will be required for players who no longer fit the long‑term plan.

As the club navigates these choices, the increasing quality in Birmingham’s attacking ranks means some players will inevitably be left behind. The decision on Wright will signal how the Blues balance ambition with squad harmony moving forward.
