Bayern’s early lapse costs them against Viking Stavanger

Under the bright lights of the Champions League group stage, FC Bayern Munich found themselves staring at a half‑time that would be remembered for everything that went wrong. Within the opening two minutes, a header from Gianni Stensness after a corner put the Norwegian side ahead, and a second strike before the break widened the gap.

First‑half shock

Gianni Stensness rose in the centre of the six‑yard box after a corner and powered a header into the right corner of the net that had been guarded by Neuer’s stand‑in, Jonas Urbig. The early goal set the tone for a half that Bayern would struggle to recover from.

Before the interval, Peter Christiansen seized a clever move against Nathaniel Brown, surged forward and unleashed a flat shot from twenty metres that left the Bayern defence helpless, extending Viking Stavanger’s lead.

Kramer’s critique

On the stadium’s side, TV analyst Christoph Kramer did not mince words. He called the 1‑0 score “the absolute catalyst for euphoria” that Bayern could have avoided, and warned that away teams must “cool the stadium in the early minutes and even fire things onto the stands”.

Kramer, a 2014 World Cup winner, added that he was a “big fan of Bayern’s style under Vincent Kompany in recent years”, yet lamented the lack of creativity at the start. He suggested that centre‑back Dayot Upamecano would benefit Bayern’s attack, even from a defensive position.

Munich’s missed chances

FC Bayern tried to shake off Viking Stavanger’s pressing from the first whistle. In the first minute, centre‑back Min‑jae Kim lost possession at the corner flag, allowing Jonathan Tah to clear the ball to the opponent’s corner where Stensness scored.

After the early setbacks, Bayern managed only a handful of dangerous moments, prompting Kramer to note that Stavanger “is not wildly undeservedly 2‑0 up”.

Vincent Kompany introduced the French defender in the second half, while Ismael Saibari and Alphonso Davies also featured for the Bavarians, but the early damage proved too great to overturn.
