Bayern breaks thirty-year ban: Neuer celebrates historic win in Madrid

Bayern Munich secured a historic away victory against Atlético Madrid on Tuesday evening, the first German side to have won this century. For goalkeeper Manuel Neuer it was a special moment, and as he played his 164th Champions League‑match, which he recorded as his 164th match in the billion ball.

Historical overview of German victories

See us more often on Google. The last German away victory against the Rojiblancos dates from 16 October 1996, when Borussia Dortmund won at the Vicente Calderón thanks to a single goal from Stefan Reuter.

Since that evening Atlético have hosted German teams sixteen times; four of those drew and the others lost.

In the match Lennart Karl and Konrad Laimer decided the duel after the break for Bayern. This turned the evening into a celebration for Neuer.

With his 164th Champions League‑appearance Neuer has already surpassed all his compatriots, including Thomas Müller with 163 and Lionel Messi with the same number. He still has to catch up with only two gentlemen: Iker Casillas with 177 and Cristiano Ronaldo, who tops the list with 183 matches.

Neuer praised the performance: ‘It was total dominance from the first to the last minute; we always had an answer, whatever Atlético did.’
