Kompany enjoys hot chocolate as Bayern outclass Atlético

From his Munich sofa, Vincent Kompany watched Bayern Munich defeat Atlético Madrid in the Champions League, sipping hot chocolate as his side opened the scoring within a minute of the restart and sealed the win with a second goal before half‑time.

Bayern's early dominance

Harry Kane, the new Ballon d'Or winner, featured on the pitch but did not find the net. Several Bayern regulars – Jamal Musiala, Serge Gnabry, Ismael Saibari and Luis Diaz – were unavailable for the match. Captain Joshua Kimmich delivered the first Bayern shot on target just 35 seconds after the restart.

Lennart Karl, aged 18, scored the opening goal in the 54th minute after stealing the ball from Le Normand and beating goalkeeper Jan Oblak. Konrad Laimer added a second strike in the 74th minute, completing a tidy two‑goal lead.

French referee François Letexier oversaw the game, issuing cautions to Joshua Kimmich and Giovanni Simeone. Bayern’s line‑up featured goalkeeper Manuel Neuer; defenders Upamecano, Tah, Stanisic and Laimer; midfielders Kimmich and Bischof; and forwards Davies, Olise, Karl and Harry Kane.

Atlético’s eleven included goalkeeper Jan Oblak; defenders Koke, Hancko, Pubill and Grimaldo; midfielders Marcos Llorente, Barrios, Giovanni Simeone and Baena; and forwards Álvaro Álvarez, Sorloth and Kang‑in.

Kompany's home celebration and Bayern's campaign

Aaron Danks, Kompany’s assistant, instructed the side to persist and accelerate at the break. For the first time in a Champions League match, Kompany could not motivate his players at half‑time, watching from 1 500 kilometres away.

Manuel Neuer kept a clean sheet, marking his 164 Champions League appearances and moving him to third‑most capped behind Cristiano Ronaldo (183) and Iker Casillas (177). Bayern remain unbeaten in this Champions League campaign, having collected eight points from twelve.

The German champions will travel to Lille in three weeks for their next group fixture. Atlético, with four points from twelve, must win against Viking FK and PSV Eindhoven to avoid slipping out of the top 24.

The report was written by Simon Hamoir, a foreign football specialist for the Associated Press. The article’s sharing options include the word Discover. The French phrase Quand deux des derniers demi‑finalistes se croisent appears, highlighting the anticipation of the encounter.
