Barcelona target Valencia midfielder as €60 million clause looms
Barcelona are monitoring Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra as his release clause is set to rise from €40 million to €60 million on Saturday, 1 August, while the club conducts its pre‑season camp at St George’s Park in England and hopes to secure the player before the new season begins.
FC Barcelona’s sporting department, headed by director Deco, is working around the clock to reinforce the squad ahead of the campaign. The Blaugrana are using the England base to evaluate potential signings.
An injury to Frenkie de Jong has prompted head coach Hansi Flick to request a new midfielder. The Dutch midfielder’s absence leaves a gap in the centre of the pitch that Barcelona are keen to fill.
While the club’s top priority remains the acquisition of a new No 9, Javi Guerra has emerged as a viable option on the midfield shortlist. According to COPE, citing Mundo Deportivo, the Spaniard is already on Barcelona’s radar.
Guerra’s current release clause stands at €40 million, but it will automatically increase to €60 million on 1 August. Valencia have previously sold players for less than their contractual buy‑out amounts during Peter Lim’s ownership, suggesting a possible negotiation path.
The Valencia midfielder has repeatedly affirmed his desire to stay, saying he renewed his contract last year and has no intention of leaving. Nevertheless, he has been spotted chatting with Barcelona players at St George’s Park, where both clubs are training.
If Barcelona decide to activate the €60 million clause, the higher price could become a stumbling block, yet the club will continue to monitor Guerra as a midfield solution. For the 22‑year‑old, the clause increase adds uncertainty to a summer that he has said he wants to spend with Valencia.
