AZ eyes Valdemar Byskov as contingency if Van Bergen deal stalls
In a move reported at 19:06 today, AZ Alkmaar are weighing a bid for 21‑year‑old Danish midfielder Valdemar Byskov, whose market value exceeds €2 million and whose contract runs to mid‑2030, as a fallback if the club’s pursuit of Thom van Bergen collapses.
AZ Alkmaar have been trying for months to pry Thom van Bergen away from FC Groningen. Negotiations have been described as difficult, with the northern club holding firm while Van Bergen himself says he is open to a move but acknowledges the obstacles.
With the Van Bergen deal proving elusive, AZ have turned their attention to a younger option. Danish midfielder Valdemar Byskov has emerged as the club’s primary alternative.
Tipsbladet AZ’s interest in Byskov is conditional, positioning him only as a backup should the Van Bergen transfer fall through. The Dutch side is contemplating a bid, although no formal offer has been submitted yet.
Transfermarkt lists Byskov’s market value at just over €2 million. His contract with FC Midtjylland is set to run until the middle of 2030.
During his spell at FC Midtjylland, the 21‑year‑old has amassed 99 appearances, netting 13 goals. He has also contributed nine assists across those matches.
In the 2023/2024 season Byskov spent a brief loan period at Portuguese side CD Mafra. He featured in one league game in Portugal’s second division and added a single cup appearance.
On the international stage, Byskov has earned three caps for Denmark’s U21 side. These appearances underline his growing profile among Danish prospects.
