Authority and youth: How Van der Sar shaped United’s golden era

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Four Premier League crowns, a Champions League trophy and two League Cups define Edwin van der Sar’s tenure at Manchester United, where the Dutch veteran arrived at 34 in 2005 and departed in 2011 after six seasons in England’s Premier League.

He stepped into England’s Premier League as a seasoned goalkeeper, quickly becoming a cornerstone of United’s back four. Over his six‑year spell from 2005 to 2011, Van der Sar added an incredible array of silverware to his résumé.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show on BBC Sounds, Van der Sar recalled the manager’s demand for authority, saying, “When I came in, what the manager asked you to have is authority. When building up from behind, making sure that there’s authority in the back four.”

He highlighted Rio Ferdinand’s development, noting the defender was still becoming a world‑class player, and recalled later arrivals Nemanja Vitis and Patrice Evra joining the squad.

Van der Sar also praised the energy supplied by younger stars such as Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo, saying their presence made the period “incredible.”

He lauded Sir Alex Ferguson’s method, describing how the manager built a puzzle that culminated in a Champions League‑winning and League‑winning team by adding three or four pieces that gelled together.

The former Netherlands goalkeeper’s story illustrates how a late‑career move can become an unforgettable era, underscoring the market’s appetite for experienced players who can deliver immediate success.
