Alexander Blessin aims to halt Borussia's winless start this season
Alexander Blessin, the former Union Sint-Gillis coach, has taken charge of Borussia Monchengladbach and is determined to avoid a second consecutive relegation in Germany. Les Fohlen have yet to earn a single point in the Bundesliga, having lost both matches 2‑1.
From Union to Monchengladbach
Blessin spent only one season at Union Sint-Gillis, Entre Karel Geraerts and Sébastien Pocognoli. He described the Parc Duden as feeling like home, yet chose to continue his career in Germany to stay close to his wife. His wife suffered a spinal cord infarction shortly after his return to Belgium, leaving her lower limbs immobilised.
Before joining Monchengladbach, Blessin had been coach of Ostende and considered resigning but remained until the season's end. He then took over at historic Sankt Pauli, guiding them to Bundesliga survival in his first season. The following campaign ended in relegation despite a well‑run side and a cup quarter‑final appearance.
Sankt Pauli's board kept faith in Blessin until the end, yet he chose not to lead the team in the second division, preferring to step aside. He is now the head coach of Borussia Monchengladbach, tasked with reversing their poor start.
Stuttgart board member warns Bundesliga rivals may overtake them
Early Bundesliga challenges
Les Fohlen have yet to claim a point in the Bundesliga, having lost both of Blessin's first matches 2‑1, first to Hoffenheim and then to Cologne. The defeats leave the club still on zero points.
Tonight Borussia Monchengladbach travel to face Stuttgart, a match that could provide the first point. Blessin has been seen rallying his squad in the central circle, urging them with fierce determination. He told his players, “Gather around me and play brave and courageous.”
The pressure remains immense, and Blessin says he will push his players to the limit. A positive result against Stuttgart could finally break the winless streak and restore confidence.
