Álex Baena urges Julián Álvarez to chase Barcelona dream
Álex Baena, teammate of Julián Álvarez at Atlético Madrid, publicly urged the Argentine striker to pursue his dream of joining FC Barcelona after the Spanish club dismissed a €100 million offer and lodged a complaint with FIFA over the Catalan side’s conduct.
Álvarez has set his sights on a move to FC Barcelona, while Atlético Madrid has repeatedly rebuffed the Catalan club’s attempts to sign the 26‑year‑old forward. The Spanish side maintains that the player remains under contract and is not for sale.
A bid valued at one hundred million euros was turned down by Atlético Madrid. The club also filed a formal complaint with FIFA alleging improper conduct by the La Liga champion.
When asked about Álvarez, Baena said, “Als hij een droom heeft, zou ik hem adviseren die na te jagen.” He explained that the advice was personal and reflected his understanding of the striker’s ambitions.
Baena later told La Vanguardia, “Misschien had ik het anders aangepakt, maar het is een persoonlijke zaak, en als het echt zijn droom is, zou ik hem aanraden die na te jagen.” He added that if Atlético Madrid refuses to sell, Álvarez must accept the decision, but the clubs are likely to discuss the matter after the World Cup.
Both players are currently participating in the World Cup. Baena featured in Spain’s last two group‑stage matches against Saudi Arabia and Uruguay.
Álvarez has so far only appeared as a substitute for Argentina in the tournament. He has not started any matches for Argentina at the World Cup.
