Alan Shearer hails Arsenal’s £75m Guimaraes coup as midfield masterpiece

Arsenal have completed the signing of Brazilian midfielder Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United for a reported £75 million fee, the club confirmed ahead of their upcoming announcement.

Mikel Arteta had identified Guimaraes as his primary midfield target earlier this summer, believing his addition essential to retain the Premier League title next season.

Guimaraes spent five productive years at St James’ Park, helping Newcastle qualify for the Champions League and win the Carabao Cup during his tenure.

The 28‑year‑old was keen to leave after Newcastle’s disappointing 2025‑26 campaign and after learning of interest from the Premier League champions.

His arrival will bolster an Arsenal midfield already featuring Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard, Mikel Merino, Martin Zubimendi, Eberechi Eze and Myles Lewis‑Skelly.

Shearer admitted he is “really disappointed” as a Newcastle fan but understands the player’s desire to join the champions, noting Guimaraes’ professionalism and attitude.

The signing makes Guimaraes Arsenal’s third summer acquisition after winger Christos Tzolis and backup goalkeeper Illan Meslier, and the Gunners begin their title defence on August 21 against newly‑promoted Coventry City.
