Ajax eyes Sommer as Ter Stegen and Flekken remain targets
Ajax is considering signing Yann Sommer as the club looks to bolster its goalkeeper options. Sommer, 37, will become a free agent at the end of the month after his contract with Internazionale expires. The Dutch club is exploring transfer possibilities ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
Marc-André ter Stegen and Mark Flekken are also linked with Ajax, according to reports. Ter Stegen, 32, has been a long-term target for multiple clubs, while Flekken, 32, remains a Premier League option after his move to Brentford. Both goalkeepers are under contract elsewhere but have been repeatedly connected to Ajax in recent months.
Ajax manager Míchel is reportedly keen on reuniting with Sommer, who he previously coached at Borussia Mönchengladbach. The Swiss international has made over 500 senior appearances across his career, including stints at Basel and Mönchengladbach. Sommer’s experience and leadership are seen as valuable assets for Ajax’s ambitions.
The club’s pursuit of Sommer comes amid ongoing goalkeeper discussions in Amsterdam. Ajax has been active in the transfer market this summer, with multiple positions under review. Sommer’s availability as a free agent could accelerate negotiations if both parties agree terms.
Ter Stegen, currently at Barcelona, has been linked with moves to clubs including Chelsea and Manchester United in recent years. Flekken, who joined Brentford in 2023, has been a consistent performer in the Premier League. Ajax’s interest in all three goalkeepers reflects the club’s focus on securing a reliable successor for André Onana, who left for Manchester United in 2023.
Ajax’s next moves in the transfer window will be closely watched, with a decision on Sommer’s future expected in the coming weeks.
