Agents Manchester United eye free defenders as gaps widen

Agents Manchester United face a pressing need to plug defensive frailties after a midfield‑focused transfer window left the back line exposed, with Luke Shaw under fire and Wayne Rooney flagging the lack of alternatives. The club now turns to the free‑agent market to shore up the defence before January.

Midfield overhaul leaves defence exposed

United sealed deals for Andrey Santos, Youri Tielemans and Carlos Baleba, giving the midfield more legs and allowing Bruno Fernandes to operate further forward. The influx of talent has also meant the defence enjoys greater protection, but the focus on midfield has left other areas thin.

Only two matches into the 2026/27 Premier League season – against newly promoted Hull City and Ipswich Town – United conceded four goals in two games, highlighting the back‑line’s vulnerabilities. Luke Shaw has borne the brunt of criticism, with Wayne Rooney naming him as one of the squad’s biggest weaknesses.

Free agents on United's radar

Among the free‑agent pool, Real Madrid legend Sergio Ramos, now 40, is available for nothing, as is David Alaba, a trophy‑winner with Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Dani Carvajal, still a regular under Xabi Alonso, and 32‑year‑old Raphael Guerreiro also feature, while Diogo Leite, 27, logged 23 Bundesliga matches for Union Berlin last term.

Karim Benzema remains the most tantalising prospect, having scored nine goals in ten Saudi Pro League matches last season, though he is no longer the player he once was.
