After his first Pro League start, Vandevoordt saves PSV's penalty
After being named starter for the first time between the posts for Belgium in the Pro League, Maarten Vandevoordt saved a penalty in the Champions League against PSV Eindhoven, taken by former star Ivan Perisic. This gesture continues a rich week, during which he had already experienced the joy of a first start with the Red Devils against France in the Nations League.
A first start in the spotlight
Last week, Vandevoordt was chosen as the starting goalkeeper of the Red Devils for the away match in France for the Nations League. Despite a Belgian 4-1 defeat, he was able to face high‑level attackers and gain international experience. This first start was described as “not entirely successful”, but it confirmed the Belgian staff’s confidence.
The PSV‑Leipzig clash in the Champions League
The same goalkeeper then guarded the posts for RB Leipzig on the second matchday of the Champions League, against PSV Eindhoven. Against Perisic, who has played for Club Brugge, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan and Tottenham, Vandevoordt won the duel by saving the penalty. The goalkeeper described this save as a positive signal for Leipzig, where he has continued his progression since his arrival in Germany in 2024 after a spell at Genk.
Standout Kovár: frustration after losing Champions League duel in Germany
Having arrived at Leipzig after honing his skills at Genk, Vandevoordt spent a long time as a backup before earning the staff’s trust. When he left Limburg, he was presented as the successor to Thibaut Courtois, thanks to Racing’s tradition of producing goalkeepers, which has already yielded Mike Penders and Lucca Brughmans.
At 24, Vandevoordt is at a crucial point in his career. He must string together performances, gain consistency and be ready when his team needs him. His save against PSV is therefore an important moment for both Leipzig and Belgium.
The goalkeeper also emphasized that this save boosts his confidence ahead of the upcoming challenges in the Champions League and the Nations League. He remains, however, aware that the road to legendary gloves, like those of Courtois, is still long.
