Abdukodir Khusanov’s near‑miss with Newcastle and his Man City rise

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Abdukodir Khusanov transferred to Manchester City in January 2025, joining from French club RC Lens. The Uzbekistan international signed for the Etihad Stadium after a winter‑window move that attracted interest across Europe and showcased his performances in Ligue 1.

Newcastle United were among the clubs that entered concrete negotiations for the centre‑back, with his Agent Gairat Khasbiullin confirming a “great rapport” with the Magpies. The Magpies, based at St. James’ Park in England, were the first to congratulate Khusanov on his City move, according to the agent. While Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Paris Saint-Germain also showed interest, only Newcastle progressed to substantive talks, the agent said.

Director of football Hugo Viana has integrated Khusanov into Manchester City’s defence, and new manager Enzo Maresca will assess his role as the squad rebuild continues. Khusanov has already collected an EFL Cup and FA Cup in his debut season, suggesting he is firmly embedded at the Etihad Stadium. Khasbiullin added that the warm relationship with Newcastle remains, hinting that a future Uzbek player could end up at the Magpies’ St. James’ Park.

The agent told Sport Express and relayed by Sport Witness that “the others may have shown interest, just like many other teams. It never got to the point of concrete talks,” adding that “Magpies” and “City.” remain on good terms, and “Newcastle.” will welcome any future Uzbek talent. He also noted, “I’ve always tried to keep good relations, sending holiday greetings and even dinner when I travel to England,” underscoring the professionalism behind the negotiations. What this means for both clubs is a continued channel of communication, and Whether Khusanov’s future remains at Manchester City or a move to Newcastle materialises, the agent’s comments keep the dialogue open for both sides.

Former Real Madrid defender reports have also linked Khusanov with a possible future transfer, adding another layer to the speculation. For now, the bridge built during the failed Newcastle bid continues to benefit both sides as they plan ahead.
