£5 million deal sees Dom Ballard join Bristol City

Dom Ballard has transferred from Leyton Orient to Championship club Bristol City for a reported £5 million fee that includes add‑ons and a sell‑on percentage. The move was announced in an Action Image by Alex Lawes, published Aug 9, 2026, 7:15 AM GMT+1.

Bristol City pursued Ballard because he finished last season with 23 goals in 40 appearances, making him the most prolific striker in League One and a proven goal scorer at a young age. His record suggests he can immediately strengthen City’s attacking options.

Leyton Orient fan pundit Alex Rose said: “If it is £5 million up‑front with add‑ons then it makes sense. He’s definitely worth more when you look at what has been floated around… it had to be done to allow us to bring two in.” Rose made the comment while discussing the timing of the deal.

Orient’s board sees the £5 million injection as essential to reinvest in the squad, especially after losing previous top scorer Charlie Kelman and now needing to replace their only striker. The club plans to sign two new forwards before the season starts.

Ballard arrived at Brisbane Road on a permanent basis from Southampton after loan spells at Reading, Blackpool and Cambridge United, all third‑tier clubs, and had been a highly‑rated prospect at St Mary’s.

In the 2025‑26 League One season no other Orient player scored more than eight goals, confirming Ballard’s dominance of the club’s scoring charts.

Rose compared Ballard’s valuation with recent fees for Richard Kone (£7 million) and Lorent Tolaj (£4.5 million), arguing that Ballard’s age and potential justify a higher price.

Orient are also linked with former Truro City forward Jaze Kabia, who could be signed from Grimsby Town ahead of the new campaign, potentially beating Plymouth Argyle for his services.
