£120 million tag tests Xabi Alonso’s resolve on Enzo Fernandez

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

A £120 million price tag hangs over Argentine World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez as new Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso vows the midfielder will remain at Stamford Bridge, even as the Blues prepare a pre‑season tour of Australia on July 25 this summer.

The £120 million fee underscores the financial stakes surrounding the Blues' midfield plans. It highlights how crucial the midfielder is seen in Chelsea's strategy.

Chelsea says it would demand a fee if he departs, despite rumours that a fee could be demanded if he leaves. The club’s stance makes any potential exit costly.

Fernandez has been linked with a move away all summer, with Manchester City and Real Madrid among the clubs rumored to be interested. Real Madrid issued a statement denying any interest.

The player remains under a long‑term contract that runs until the summer of 2032, giving Chelsea little pressure to sell. The club would require at least £120 million for any departure, a figure that provides leverage in negotiations.

Chelsea’s recent spending includes a £116 million acquisition of Elliott Anderson from Nottingham Forest, underlining the club’s willingness to invest in midfield talent. The deal highlights the financial commitment the Blues are prepared to make for key positions.

Speaking at his first press conference with The Athletic, Xabi Alonso answered a direct question about Fernandez’s future with a simple “Yes”, confirming the player’s importance to his plans. Alonso declined to reveal details of their conversation, keeping specifics private.

While the club will not block a potential exit, any suitor must meet the hefty price, a factor that could shape the midfield market. Chelsea also weigh options on Joao Pedro, Emmanuel Emegha and Liam Delap.

Chelsea’s pre‑season itinerary includes a trip to Australia on July 25, where Nicolas Jackson, who returned from a loan at Bayern Munich after the Bundesliga champions chose not to make his move permanent, will be part of the squad. Jackson’s return adds further competition for attacking positions.

With Jackson, Pedro, Emegha and Delap all competing for similar roles, retaining Fernandez provides stability while the club decides which of the latter trio to cash in on this summer. The decisions made will influence the roster ahead of the new campaign.
