AZ cuts ties as Zico Buurmeester heads to Spain for €1m
Zico Buurmeester, 24, will leave AZ Alkmaar after thirteen seasons to join Spanish CD Leganés. The transfer fee is reported as one million euros, and the Dutch club will also receive a future‑sale percentage.
Buurmeester progressed through AZ’s youth system from 2013 onward. He never became a regular starter for the senior side, making 57 appearances overall, most of them with Jong AZ.
In the 2022‑23 season he spent a loan spell at PEC Zwolle. The loan provided him with regular first‑team minutes that he lacked at AZ.
CD Leganés compete in Spain’s second division. The midfielder has agreed to a four‑season contract with the Spanish club.
AZ will receive the €1 million fee and, according to reports, a percentage of any future transfer fee. This arrangement reflects AZ’s strategy of monetising surplus players while retaining a stake in their future value.
Buurmeester’s arrival bolsters Leganés’ midfield options for the coming seasons. The club will look to integrate him as they aim for promotion challenges.
