Ajax’s loan gamble on Ter Stegen: a potential upgrade in goal

🇳🇱

Marc-Andre ter Stegen will join Ajax on loan until the end of the season, with Barcelona continuing to shoulder part of his wages. The arrangement reflects Ajax’s inability to cover the full cost or pay a full transfer fee.

Ajax have eyed ter Stegen all summer, and head coach Michel is keen to reunite with the Barcelona shot stopper. Barcelona will remain responsible for a share of his wages as part of the loan deal.

Ter Stegen spent the previous season on loan at Girona but managed only a handful of appearances because of injury. Ajax’s success with the signing will depend on him staying injury free.

The German joined Barcelona in 2014 and has collected numerous trophies with the Catalan giants. At 34, he brings leadership, experience and a foot‑play style that matches Ajax’s goalkeeping philosophy.

Remko Pasveer left halfway through the previous season, and Vitezslav Jaros, who had a decent campaign, will now serve as his backup. The loan signals Ajax’s intent to revamp the squad as they aim to challenge for Dutch trophies.

On paper the loan upgrades Ajax’s defensive line and could prove shrewd business if ter Stegen remains fit. For Barcelona the deal reduces its wage burden while keeping the player active.
