Vincent Janssen swaps Belgian title chase for MLS adventure

After four seasons at Antwerp’s Bosuil, 32‑year‑old Dutch striker Vincent Janssen is set to leave the Belgian side for a new chapter across the Atlantic with MLS club Portland Timbers, a move made possible by his contract expiring and a free‑transfer status.

During his time at Antwerp, Janssen featured in 173 matches, netting 64 goals and providing 27 assists, establishing himself as a regular starter. His most productive season came in 2022/23 when Antwerp secured both the league title and the Belgian Cup.

Beyond scoring, Janssen was valued for his work rate in duels and his ability to act as a focal point in attack. He also emerged as a leader in the dressing room, influencing teammates on and off the pitch.

Antwerp originally paid €5.5 million in the summer of 2022 to acquire him from Mexican side Monterrey. Earlier in his career, Janssen represented Almere City, AZ, Tottenham Hotspur and Fenerbahçe, with his performances at AZ earning a move to the Premier League.

On the international stage, Janssen earned 22 caps for the Netherlands, scoring seven goals. He featured regularly for the Dutch national team during his peak years.

Portland Timbers, competing in the Western Conference of MLS, are prepared to sign him once formalities are completed, offering him a contract in the Verenigde Staten. Because his Antwerp contract expired, the Timbers will not pay a transfer fee. The move to the Verenigde Staten across the Atlantische Oceaan fulfills his long‑standing wish to play in MLS.
