UEFA suspends boycott plans, keeps pressure on FIFA

On Thursday afternoon, UEFA announced in a statement following the UEFA-congres in Monaco that it has suspended the boycott plans targeting all FIFA competitions, a move that pauses the federation’s earlier threat to walk away from FIFA events for its members.

FIFA pledge on WK share plan

De Europese voetbalbond UEFA said it obtained a guarantee from FIFA that the world governing body will not devise another share‑sale plan linked to the WK in the future, a demand that formed the core of UEFA’s July boycott announcement.

Even after FIFA-baas Gianni Infantino withdrew the controversial WK-plan and issued an apology, UEFA indicated it was not content with the gesture and stressed that the suspension remains provisional, to be reassessed should conditions change.

Ex‑internationals demand FIFA change as Infantino eyes 2027

The upcoming FIFA-toernooi for women’s under‑20 teams, scheduled for next month in Poland, is therefore not in jeopardy; six European nations will compete and the Polish football association has reported no indication of a boycott from European members.

Earlier that day UEFA announced its intention to bring legal action against Infantino for alleged financial mismanagement tied to the disputed WK-plan, citing suspicions of fraud.

The organisation reiterated a breach of trust with Infantino and warned that, should the Swiss official secure another term as FIFA president, UEFA will work to field a ‘credible, integrity‑focused’ alternative candidate.
