Toulouse eye FC Basel Andrej Bacanin to fill widening midfield gap

Toulouse have opened talks with FC Basel to sign 19‑year‑old defensive midfielder Andrej Bacanin, a move reported by Foot Mercato as the French club seeks to plug a midfield void ahead of the coming season. The negotiation comes as Toulouse prepare for the new campaign.

Toulouse have struggled to secure a reliable No.8, a deficiency that has prompted the search for a player who can provide both depth and versatility. Bacanin is expected to fill that role, offering the flexibility to operate as a defensive midfielder or a more advanced No.8.

The club’s initial target was Matias Siltanen, who currently plays for Djurgarden. Le TéFéCé had been hopeful of concluding a deal for the Finland youth international, but Djurgarden’s valuation proved a stumbling block.

Bacanin, primarily a defensive midfielder but also capable of operating as a No.8, featured in 25 games for Basel last season. The Serbia youth international, the Serb with ten caps for the U19s, recorded two assists during that spell.

Toulouse have now contacted the Serb concerning a potential summer move, shifting focus after the Djurgarden hurdle. The development was noted by Luke Entwistle.

Finalising the transfer will depend on reaching an agreement with Basel on the player’s valuation, a factor that previously stalled the Siltanen pursuit. A successful deal would give Toulouse a much‑needed option in midfield while providing Basel with a potential fee for the promising youngster.
