Ronaldo’s vote: Zidane’s profile fits France’s post‑Deschamps era

🇫🇷

In a wide‑range interview with L’Equipe, 49‑year‑old Ronaldo praised Zinédine Zidane as the perfect candidate to replace Didier Deschamps at the helm of Les Bleus after the 2026 FIFA World Cup, noting Zidane’s overwhelming favourite status and his own experience as a former Real Madrid teammate.

Ronaldo described Zidane as the best player he ever shared a pitch with and the finest teammate of his career. The Brazilian legend recalled their time together at Real Madrid, where their partnership defined an era of success. Ronaldo, who ended his playing days at Inter Milan, reflected on their collaboration.

Ronaldo recalled the 2006 FIFA World Cup quarter‑final, when Zidane’s performance left Brazil stunned. “He delivered an absolutely exceptional performance, at the highest technical level imaginable… It was a truly masterful demonstration,” he said.

After the match, Zidane entered Brazil’s locker room to exchange jerseys, but Ronaldo asked him to leave due to the emotional atmosphere. “He came into our locker room, but the atmosphere was terrible, a lot of players were crying. I congratulated him, but I asked him to leave,” Ronaldo recalled.

Zidane is now the overwhelming favourite to succeed Deschamps once the French coach steps down after the 2026 World Cup. Ronaldo believes his tactical intelligence and character suit the national team role perfectly.

“He has the perfect profile for the job. He has the talent, the experience, the tactical intelligence, and the ideal character. And this isn’t just a hunch; he’s already proven it with his brilliant spell as Real Madrid manager,” Ronaldo asserted.

The timing of Deschamps’ exit and the formal announcement of Zidane’s appointment remain uncertain, leaving French supporters to await the federation’s decision.
