Potential exit for Boehly and Walter as Clearwater eyes Chelsea stake

Potential exit for Boehly and Walter as Clearwater eyes Chelsea stake

Todd Boehly and Mark Walter are in talks to sell their combined 25.6 per cent share of Chelsea to Clearwater, a move that could reshape the Premier League club’s ownership landscape as of Aug 2026. (ImagesTodd) The discussion centres on each owner’s 12.8 per cent stake and a valuation exceeding £5bn.

The current owners entered the picture just over four years ago when the BlueCo consortium, including Boehly, Walter and Clearlake, bought Chelsea in a £2.5bn deal. At that time they pledged a further £1.75bn of investment to drive the club forward.

Financial commitments and on‑field results

Since May 2022 the club has spent nearly £1.5bn on player transfer fees yet has not secured either the Premier League title or the Champions League trophy. In the most recent accounting period Chelsea recorded £348m in signings while recouping £138m from outgoing players.

Clearlake – a private equity firm based in California – holds a 61.5 per cent stake in the club. The remaining 38.5 per cent is split equally between Walter, Boehly and 90‑year‑old Swiss billionaire Hansjorg Wyss, though it is unknown whether Wyss will also cash in.

Previous buy‑out speculation

The present talks arrive two years after reports emerged that Clearlake and Boehly were prepared to buy each other out, highlighting the fluid nature of the club’s ownership structure.

Fans have criticised the model for poor recruitment, the appointment of six different permanent managers and rising ticket prices, while also questioning BlueCo’s multi‑club approach.

On‑field outlook under Alonso

On the sporting side, Xabi Alonso was appointed in May following the sacking of Liam Rosenior and an interim spell for Calum McFarlane. Alonso’s first‑team, the Men’s side, have already added veteran forwards Danny Welbeck (35) and Jordan Henderson (36) on free transfers.

Alonso told Men In Blazers, "For sure, we need to have the right balance in everything. The right balance in physicality, the right balance in talent and experience. You need to have the right balance in players you need to develop, and to develop this maturity." Chelsea won three of six pre‑season games, losing two and drawing one, and will kick off the season away to West London rivals Fulham next Monday.

The contrast between a possible ownership exit and a fresh managerial direction underscores a club at a crossroads, with the next chapter hinging on whether Clearwater’s involvement will bring stability or further change.
