NEC’s strategic boost: Tadic’s return fills creative void

NEC have identified a clear need for a player who can operate inside the left channel and add a goal‑threat from deeper positions, a role left vacant after last season’s reliance on wing‑backs and two number‑ten midfielders. Serbian forward Dusan Tadic completed a two‑year contract with NEC on Monday afternoon, signing as a free agent after his previous deal expired. The agreement secures his services until the summer of 2026 and marks his return to Dutch football.

Former international Hedwiges Maduro told Sportnieuws that Tadic had several options on the table but chose NEC because he values the sporting project. "It is especially surprising, because this really is a stunt," Maduro said, adding that Tadic’s decision reflects a desire to return to the Eredivisie and to play for a club with a clear vision.

Maduro expects Tadic to line up on the inside left, with fellow winger Tjaronn Chery mirroring him on the right. He also suggested that Tadic could be deployed as a striker if the situation demands, providing NEC with tactical flexibility across the front line.

According to Maduro, Tadic possesses a unique gift for staying calm in front of goal. He can delay his shot, forcing defenders to anticipate a strike, only to place the ball wide for a teammate to finish. This composure, Maduro argued, makes the signing a "top deal" for NEC.

Trainer Dick Schreuder’s preferred style, often described as “running and flying,” should not clash with Tadic’s attributes. Schreuder’s side also employed a more defensive marking system last season, meaning Tadic will not be required to chase back constantly.
