McInnes bets on Shankland leadership ahead of Dundee United clash

Rangers manager Derek McInnes stepped into the media spotlight on Friday evening, outlining his plans for his inaugural competitive outing as head coach against Dundee United away on Friday night, while confirming striker Lawrence Shankland’s appointment as captain and hinting at imminent signings.

After naming striker Lawrence Shankland as captain, McInnes said he has evidence of how well Shankland runs a dressing room at Hearts. He added that Shankland knows the club, knows what’s expected and that they have a strong relationship.

McInnes admitted that one player cannot carry the leadership alone, stating, “We need as many captains underneath him to share the burden.” He emphasized the importance of a collective leadership group.

Reflecting on former skipper James Tavernier, McInnes said the former captain would be “rolled out after every sore defeat” and that he always thought it was unfair. He stressed that his Rangers side must “deal with the responsibility” themselves.

On the transfer front, McInnes hinted that Rangers will announce a new signing tonight or tomorrow, naming South African defender Owethu Makhanya as a likely addition. He also warned that the squad is short on defensive numbers and probably still needs to bring in another couple of defenders before the window closes.

Oliver Antman, who has been linked with a move to Anderlecht, is set to leave, with McInnes confirming a deal has been agreed and that Antman has travelled to finalise it. Regarding Belgian midfielder Nico Raskin, McInnes said there have been no offers yet but the club will consider any that arise.

The Rangers manager confirmed the club will appeal his four‑game touchline ban, hoping to be present for the league opener. He also revealed that defender John Souttar “might have one or two options” to leave Ibrox and that they have already discussed his possible move.

McInnes noted that Rangers have historically struggled to start the season well, but he views the Friday night clash with Dundee United as a real opportunity to begin as they mean to go on. He added that Thelo Aasgaard and Cammy Devlin should be fit, while Connor Barron may be a bit early for selection.
