Lille breathe relief as Giroud cleared for season opener
Olivier Giroud's left‑knee scare in Lille's 1‑1 pre‑season friendly against Everton has been resolved, with reassuring medical scans allowing the nearly‑40‑year‑old striker to resume training on Tuesday and likely feature in LOSC's away match at Angers on Sunday, the first Ligue 1 fixture of the season.
Medical tests give green light
The former France forward twisted his left knee fifteen minutes into the game after a collision with Iliman Ndiaye and was substituted a few minutes later. The incident sparked immediate concern among the coaching staff.
LOSC released a statement saying the impact was benign and does not require a prolonged period out of action. The club emphasized that the injury will not sideline Giroud for an extended time.
"Les résultats sont rassurants," the club announced, confirming that the medical examinations showed no serious damage. The announcement aimed to calm supporters worried about the striker's condition.
Medical reassurance for Giroud eases Lille’s Ligue 1 start
Davide Ancelotti, Lille's new coach, added, "Olivier Giroud a eu une forte douleur. Nous avons eu peur, mais les nouvelles sont rassurantes." The Italian manager stressed that the initial fear was quickly alleviated by the medical findings.
Giroud, who will turn 40 on 30 September, scored 11 goals in 44 appearances across all competitions last season. His experience remains a key asset for the Dogues as they begin the campaign.
After spells at Montpellier, Arsenal, Chelsea and AC Milan, and a year in the United States with Los Angeles FC, Giroud signed a one‑year extension with Lille in June. The contract keeps the veteran striker at the club for another season.
He will begin individual training on Tuesday before rejoining the group, with the aim of being fit for the trip to Angers on Sunday at 15:00. Lille hope his presence will bolster their attack from the first Ligue 1 match.
