Jacob Butterfield back at Scunthorpe in player‑coach role
Jacob Butterfield, who recorded 12 goals in 89 games for Scunthorpe United between 2022 and 2024, has returned to the Iron on a player‑coach contract. The 36‑year‑old midfielder re‑joined the club after rejecting a new deal with National League rivals Gateshead.
Butterfield’s decision ends a brief spell with Gateshead, where he had been offered a fresh contract. His choice to re‑sign reflects a preference for familiar surroundings at Glanford Park.
The former Barnsley, Huddersfield Town and Derby County player brings extensive experience to the role. His previous stints at those clubs spanned several seasons in the English Football League.
Scunthorpe United have not disclosed the length of the new agreement. The club confirmed only that the arrangement combines playing duties with coaching responsibilities.
The player‑coach deal positions Butterfield to mentor younger squad members while still contributing on the pitch. Scunthorpe United hope his dual role will aid their campaign in the National League.
The Iron’s recruitment strategy continues to focus on seasoned professionals familiar with the club’s culture. Butterfield’s return adds depth to the midfield as the season progresses.
