French uproar over Charlie Hebdo cartoon of Deschamps and his mother
A new Charlie Hebdo cartoon depicting France manager Didier Deschamps (57) hurling an urn labelled “maman” into the air has ignited controversy in France, arriving just days after the coach returned from the United States to attend the funeral of his mother Ginette.
The illustration shows Deschamps tossing the urn skyward, with the caption “Didier Deschamps takes the cup home” beneath it.
The caption alludes to Vegedream’s 2018 hit “Ramenez la coupe à la maison”, the anthem that celebrated France’s world‑title triumph.
Deschamps lost his mother Ginette last week, a personal tragedy that has drawn public sympathy.
He flew back from the United States to be present at her funeral.
The cartoon’s publication sparked an uproar across France, with many questioning its taste.
