Free move powers Palace's defence boost with ex‑Barcelona Mingueza

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

The 27‑year‑old former Barcelona defender Oscar Mingueza (also known as Minguenza) is set to join Crystal Palace on a free transfer after his contract with Celta Vigo expired last month, a move confirmed by journalist Fabrizio Romano. Palace aim to bolster their back line for the upcoming domestic and European campaigns.

Celta Vigo offered Mingueza a new contract, but the 27‑year‑old Spain international declined and left the Spanish club after his deal expired. His departure follows the contract’s expiration last month.

Aston Villa have also been linked with the defender, with manager Unai Emery reportedly admiring his versatility. Villa’s interest adds another English option for the Spanish international.

Crystal Palace had kept Mingueza as a ‘secret’ target, hoping to reinforce their back line for the demands of domestic and European competitions next season. The club sees his experience as vital for competing on multiple fronts.

Mingueza progressed through Barcelona’s youth academy and broke into the first team in 2020, making 66 appearances across all competitions for the Catalan giants. His development at La Liga’s top club laid the foundation for his defensive skills.

He then enjoyed a four‑year spell with Celta Vigo, often referred to as the Sky Blues, featuring in 147 matches, scoring seven goals and providing 15 assists. This period cemented his reputation in Spanish football.

The former Barcelona academy graduate can operate anywhere across the defence, including as a wing‑back, central midfielder or right winger. Such versatility is prized by managers seeking tactical flexibility.

His arrival may affect Maxence Lacroix’s future at Palace, as Chelsea have shown interest in the French centre‑back. Under manager Pierre Sage, Palace aim to build on last season’s UEFA Conference League triumph.
