Free boost: MK Dons' midfield gets former Cardiff star Ryan Wintle
MK Dons have bolstered their midfield with a free transfer, signing 29‑year‑old Ryan Wintle after he left Cardiff City in May. The former Bluebirds midfielder arrives as the Dons aim to add depth following their promotion to League One, addressing a gap left by departing players.
The club announced the undisclosed contract on its website, confirming the free nature of the deal. The twenty‑nine‑year‑old Wintle joins without a transfer fee, allowing the Dons to allocate resources elsewhere. His signing marks the fourth addition of the season.
MK Dons boss Paul Warne praised Wintle, saying, “He has a real intent to his play and his athleticism allows him to cover the pitch really well.” Warne added that the player’s honesty and desire to win will help the Dons' midfield continue improving.
Wintle was a key figure for the Welsh club, winning Cardiff City’s player‑of‑the‑year award as the Bluebirds secured an immediate return to the Championship last season. He highlighted that his May departure was forced by circumstances completely out of his control.
Before joining Cardiff in 2021, Wintle spent six seasons with Crewe Alexandra, developing his game in the lower leagues. That long spell laid the foundation for his later success and prepared him for the demands of higher‑level football.
The addition strengthens a midfield already boasting depth after the Dons’ recent rise, but competition for places will be fierce as the squad targets a strong League One campaign. Wintle’s experience and athleticism are expected to be vital as the club seeks to consolidate its position.
