Eberl confirms serious talks as Palhinha eyes Bayern exit for Newcastle
FC Bayern Munich sporting director Max Eberl has confirmed that serious Verhandlungen are under way over Portuguese midfield star Joao Palhinha, with a potential Bayern-Abflug to English club Newcastle United looming. The talks follow failed loan‑option moves with Tottenham Hotspur and a collapsed deal with Aston Villa, and come as the club seeks to place Abgangskandidaten from the Rekordmeisters squad.
Loan spell and failed moves
Palhinha spent the previous season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, but the English side did not trigger the purchase option for the 31‑year‑old, so he returned to the Säbener Straße. While there, he was listed on the Schirm of the next English Klubs, indicating continued interest from the Premier League.
Aston Villa also showed interest, yet negotiations fell apart because the club offered only a loan with a purchase option, which Bayern deemed insufficient. The club’s Zeit for a quick sale was therefore missed, leaving the midfielder on Bayern’s payroll.
Newcastle negotiations intensify
According to German transfer expert Florian Plettenberg, Max Eberl is now in concrete Gespräche with Newcastle United, the Magpies, who have expressed definite interest in the defensive midfielder and could guide him back to England. The German sporting director’s Draht to England appears stronger than ever.
On Saturday Eberl confirmed the Verhandlungen publicly, stating, “There are Verhandlungen and they are Verhandlungen that could lead to a transfer. Deswegen wanted we also not take any risk.” His comments explained why Palhinha was absent from Bayern’s squad for the Telekom‑Cup match against Leipzig.

If the discussions conclude positively, Bayern could soon finalize the sale of what some have labelled a transfer flop, adding another Abgangskandidaten to the list of players the Rekordmeisters are ready to move on.
