Chelsea's midfield rebuild stalls as Xhaka chooses Sunderland

🇬🇧
Chelsea are looking to add seasoned midfield depth after a summer of limited signings, and their target Granit Xhaka – Sunderland’s captain – has become a focal point, with the English club having submitted an £8 million offer that the Black Cats rebuffed. Sunderland rejected the £8 million bid and made clear that their captain is not for sale, leaving Chelsea without the player they had pursued. The club’s stance underscores their commitment to retain Xhaka for the upcoming season. Xhaka had been tempted by the prospect of reuniting with his former boss Xabi Alonso at Chelsea, but after discussions with Sunderland he chose to remain at the Stadium of Light. His decision reflects a shift in priorities after talks with his current club. The Swiss midfielder is currently on World Cup duty with Switzerland, who beat Algeria 2‑0 to reach the round of 16. He has started all four matches and scored in the 4‑1 victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina. Xhaka arrived at Sunderland last summer from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £17 million. He made 36 appearances across all competitions, contributed seven goals or assists, and helped the club finish seventh in the Premier League to qualify for the Europa League. Renowned for his leadership qualities and top‑level experience, Xhaka is highly rated by his peers. With his stay confirmed, Chelsea must now seek alternative experienced midfield options before the transfer window closes. The remaining obstacle for Chelsea is finding a suitable replacement amid a shrinking market, as other clubs also compete for seasoned midfield talent.
