Chelsea's £10m chase for Granit Xhaka tests Alonso's transfer power
Chelsea are preparing a second bid of around £10 million for Swiss midfielder Granit Xhaka, who has indicated a desire to return to London, after Sunderland rejected an initial £8 million offer. The transfer is being driven by manager Xabi Alonso, who views Xhaka as a vital organiser for his side.
Xhaka's experience was a cornerstone of Alonso's successful Bayer Leverkusen side, where his understanding of positional play and ability to dictate tempo stood out. Those attributes are seen as vital for a Chelsea dressing room that has lacked leadership in tight matches.
Sunderland maintain that Xhaka is unavailable for any price, having rejected an £8 million offer and signalling they will keep the Swiss international. The player has nevertheless informed Sunderland of his wish to move to London, adding personal motivation to the negotiations.
Chelsea’s scouting list also includes Alex Scott and Ayyoub Bouaddi, but the club’s pursuit of Xhaka appears more advanced. Both Scott and Bouaddi face competition and, in Bouaddi’s case, Lille’s desire to retain him for another season.
Signing a player approaching his 34th birthday raises questions about resale value, yet the Blues are prepared to show greater flexibility this summer. Financial limits remain a factor, but the club is willing to invest beyond pure accounting considerations.
The Xhaka bid highlights Chelsea’s broader recruitment dilemma between nurturing elite youth and adding proven experience. How the £10 million offer is structured will reveal the extent of Alonso’s influence over the club’s transfer policy.
