Chelsea faces ownership reshuffle as Boehly, Walter negotiate
Change could be on the horizon at Chelsea, with co‑owners Todd Boehly and Mark Walter reportedly in talks with majority shareholder Clearlake Capital about selling their shares, according to the Financial Times. The American fund already holds more than 60% of the Blues.
Ownership stakes and control
Clearlake Capital, the American investment fund, currently owns just over 60% of Chelsea. Both Boehly, who serves as club president, and Walter, a board member, each retain a 13% stake, a level matched by Swiss businessman Hansjörg Wyss.
Together, the three 13% shareholders collectively own 39% of the club, meaning Clearlake’s majority position is complemented by a substantial minority block held by the original founders.
D’après reports, tensions have surfaced between Clearlake Capital and Todd Boehly, with the billionaire partly blamed for the club’s disappointing performances despite heavy spending in recent transfer windows. If the three parties reach an agreement, Clearlake Capital would markedly increase its influence over Chelsea’s strategic direction.

The negotiations are seen as a test of whether the Blues can align ownership ambitions with on‑field expectations, especially after a season where heavy investment failed to deliver the anticipated results.
The present ownership structure was established after the BlueCo consortium acquired the club on 30 May 2022 for under €3 billion. The consortium was founded by Boehly, Walter, Hansjörg Wyss and Clearlake Capital, consolidating their combined stakes into the current hierarchy.

Should Clearlake secure greater control, future transfer policies and managerial appointments could be reshaped to reflect the fund’s strategic vision.
