Chelsea close on Welbeck as Blues chase veteran Henderson

🇬🇧 By 4AllFootball Editorial ·

Chelsea announced on Wednesday that the Blues are on the verge of completing deals for veteran forwards Danny Welbeck and Jordan Henderson, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, as the London club moves to reinforce its squad ahead of the new season.

Xabi Alonso is the head coach of the London side this season. The wealthy club has already attracted several talents this summer, but still lacks experienced regulars. Consequently, the 35‑year‑old Welbeck and 36‑year‑old Henderson are prominently targeted. The move keeps the squad strong in Londen.

Welbeck remains under contract with Brighton & Hove Albion until 2027. He has now agreed to join Chelsea on a deal lasting until mid‑2028, with only a medical examination pending. Brighton have accepted his request for a move.

Henderson, a former Ajax midfielder, is set to assist Alonso next season. He has personally signed off on the transfer and negotiations are in the final stage. As his Brentford contract has expired, he would join Chelsea on a free transfer.

De club’s financial muscle underlines the signings, and the Blues are described by Romano as “completely round” with Welbeck secured. The former Ajax stalwart must soon follow his example, according to the transfer expert.

Ajax’s old support pillar is expected to act quickly, mirroring Chelsea’s swift moves. The Blues aim to blend veteran experience with their youthful core as the new campaign approaches.
