€25 million price tag forces Everton to weigh midfield gamble

🇬🇧

Everton Football Club faces a €25 million price tag for Parma Calcio 1913’s 24‑year‑old Belgian midfielder Mandela Keita, a deal that could reshape the Toffees’ midfield ahead of the new season. Formal talks have already begun, with the Merseyside club weighing the cost against a pressing need for defensive stability.

The deal was first broken by Sean Lunt via Sport Witness and later relayed by Nil Satis News on X. A match‑day photograph by Emmanuele Ciancaglini captures Keita gesturing during Parma’s Serie A clash with SSC Napoli at the Stadio Ennio Tardini on 12 April 2026.

Parma Calcio 1913 have set the asking price at €25 million and are refusing to lower it, according to formal negotiations have begun. The Italian side also faces interest from Champions League‑bound Atalanta, which is scouting the midfielder at the Stadio Ennio Tardini.

Keita logged 37 Serie A appearances last season, accumulating 2,991 minutes on the pitch. He recorded an 88.4 % passing accuracy, contributed one goal and one assist, and received only a single yellow card, underscoring his positional intelligence.

His durability and disciplined positioning allow him to absorb pressure without resorting to reckless challenges. The Belgian international acts as a pure defensive shield, maintaining team shape and limiting opposition chances.

Everton manager David Moyes has identified the need for a reliable midfield anchor to protect the back four. Keita’s profile matches Moyes’ blueprint, offering the tactical discipline the Toffees have lacked.

Other potential targets on the market would cost a similar amount or more, yet they lack Keita’s proven fitness record. The Toffees therefore face a gamble: pay the €25 million fee or risk a midfield void.

Should Everton hesitate, Atalanta’s interest could see the player leave Italy, leaving a gap in Everton’s squad just before the season starts. The fee, while sizeable for a club monitoring every penny, reflects the broader competition for disciplined midfielders in Europe.

Goodison Park’s recent struggles in the engine room, described as soft and vulnerable on the counter, have heightened the urgency for a steel‑backed midfielder. The Toffees’ board will have to decide whether the investment aligns with their financial constraints.
