Zeno Debast’s World Cup wait continues despite medical clearance

🇧🇪

Belgium’s squad in Seattle reached full strength today as Zeno Debast received medical clearance to train after an MRI confirmed his fitness. The 20-year-old defender had been sidelined for weeks with a thigh injury, prompting uncertainty over his World Cup participation.

Debast’s inclusion in the squad was non-negotiable for manager Rudi Garcia, who insisted on keeping him in the group despite knowing he would miss the entire group stage. The decision carried personal significance for Debast, who described it as a “very beautiful message.”

The injury occurred late in the season at Sporting, just as training was ending. “The first thing that went through my mind was, ‘Damn, I’m going to miss the World Cup,’” Debast said on Sunday. He admitted frustration at the timing but emphasized gratitude for the opportunity to work toward a comeback.

Now cleared, Debast will remain on the bench for Belgium’s match against Senegal, as he has throughout the tournament. “I’m grateful to the manager for letting me sit on the bench and experience this with the group,” he said. “Being in the stands would be nothing for me.”

His return timeline remains unclear. “When will I play? We’re taking it day by day,” Debast said. He stressed the need to be 100 percent fit, noting that he has already endured multiple injuries this season. “That’s the only way I can help the team.”

The medical staff is managing his recovery carefully. “The truth is, if it were up to me, I’d train and play today,” Debast joked. “But that might not be best. It depends on what the doctors say. They’re in good contact with Sporting’s medical team, and communication is strong.”

Family support has been crucial during this period. Debast’s entire family traveled from Vancouver to Seattle to cheer him on. “It’s been hard for them too. They want to see their son play, of course. I hadn’t seen them in a while, and it meant a lot,” he said. “I’ve had enormous support from them.”

With the group stage complete, Belgium now turns its focus to the knockout phase. Debast’s availability remains a key question as the Red Devils look to strengthen their defensive options for the next stage.
