FC Volendam barred from fans for Willem II play-off

🇳🇱 19 May 2026

FC Volendam will play the first leg of their promotion/relegation play‑off against Willem II without any supporters. Coach Rick Kruys said he was disappointed by the decision, speaking on camera for VoetbalPrimeur. The match is scheduled to take place at Willem II’s stadium.

The play‑off pits the Eerste Divisie side Volendam against Eredivisie club Willem II as they fight for a place in the top tier. The first leg is the opening encounter of the two‑match series.

The ban on supporters follows disturbances that erupted after Volendam’s 1‑2 defeat to Telstar. Club officials decided to punish the fans for their involvement in the riots.

Kruys emphasized that the absence of supporters will affect the atmosphere but urged the players to stay focused on the sporting task. He expressed hope that the team can perform despite the empty stands.

The sanction is intended as a deterrent, signaling that violent behaviour will not be tolerated by the club. Management hopes the measure will prevent further incidents.

Playing in an empty stadium may reduce the usual home‑away advantage, but Volendam’s preparation will continue as planned. The club will rely on its own resolve to secure a positive result.

If the second leg proceeds without further trouble, the club may lift the ban and allow fans to return. The upcoming fixture remains crucial for both sides’ season objectives.
