Ajax's €20m salary puzzle: why Barcelona's keeper may leave

🇳🇱

Marc‑André ter Stegen, the 34‑year‑old German goalkeeper of FC Barcelona, has signalled his desire to join Ajax, with the Dutch club reportedly able to cover about fifteen percent of his estimated €20 million‑a‑year salary. The move could materialise next week pending final approval from Barcelona.

Ter Stegen has informed Jordi Cruijff and Ajax coach Míchel of his wish to transfer to Amsterdam. He hopes to join the Ajax squad next week, although Barcelona’s final consent is still required.

Negotiations between Ajax and FC Barcelona are underway, with Ajax can afford roughly fifteen percent of the goalkeeper’s salary. Barcelona estimates Ter Stegen’s wage at around €20 million per year.

Barcelona says the salary no longer fits its sporting and financial policy, but the club is prepared to cooperate on a departure. To offset the cost, Barcelona wants the agreement to include variable components.

Jordi Cruijff has indicated that Ajax does not have the budget to take on a large portion of the salary. This financial gap is the main obstacle to finalising the deal.

The proposed variable terms could involve bonuses linked to the number of matches Ter Stegen plays, winning trophies and qualifying for the Champions League. Such clauses would allow Barcelona to recoup part of the wage during the season.

If the variable structure is accepted, Barcelona could recover a share of the €20 million bill while Ajax would secure a world‑class goalkeeper within its limited budget. Both clubs see the arrangement as a potential win‑win, pending approval.
