Aston Villa win first Europa League title in Istanbul

🇩🇪 24 May 2026

Aston Villa secured their first-ever Europa League title with a historic victory over Freiburg in Istanbul on Wednesday night.

The English side dominated much of the contest at the Atatürk Olympic Stadium, controlling possession and creating clear chances against a resilient Freiburg side. A single goal from Ollie Watkins in the 24th minute proved decisive as Villa claimed the trophy in emphatic fashion.

Freiburg struggled to impose themselves, managing limited attacking opportunities throughout the match. Their best chance arrived late, but Bernd Leno’s sharp reflexes denied Roland Sallai’s effort, preserving Villa’s clean sheet.

For Aston Villa, the triumph marks their first major European trophy since the 1982 European Super Cup. The win also secures qualification for next season’s Champions League, elevating their status among Europe’s elite clubs.

Villarreal manager Marcelino García Toral acknowledged Villa’s quality, stating the team thoroughly deserved their victory. Freiburg head coach Christian Streich admitted his side lacked the cutting edge required to trouble the English champions.

Celebrations continued long into the night in Istanbul as Villa players and staff soaked in the historic achievement. Club captain John McGinn lifted the trophy in front of a jubilant traveling support.

The result caps a remarkable season for Aston Villa, who have now secured European football for the next campaign while adding a continental crown to their cabinet.

Looking ahead, attention turns to Villa’s Premier League campaign as they seek to build on this success domestically.
