Zaniolo hails Mourinho’s influence while praising Leão’s world‑class status
Nicolò Zaniolo, the Udinese midfielder, spoke to Calciomercato about his former Roma boss José Mourinho and Portuguese forward Rafael Leão, offering high praise for both men and recalling a decisive Conference League moment.
Mourinho’s impact on the Italian
Zaniolo described Mourinho as “special in everything – management, on‑field tactics and vision of the game”. He recalled a Conference League final where the coach overruled the technical staff, insisting that Zaniolo should start because he could score. Zaniolo indeed netted the winning goal.
The player added that Mourinho would often tell the squad, “Tomorrow we start strong, put them under pressure and lead 1‑0”, a plan that materialised the following day. He called the Portuguese manager a “master” and said they still exchange WhatsApp messages, underscoring a bond that extends beyond the pitch.
Leão’s move praised as world‑class
Zaniolo also commented on Rafael Leão’s recent transfer to Galatasaray, calling the winger “a world‑class champion and one of the strongest wide players in circulation”. He highlighted Galatasaray’s prestige, its participation in the Champions League, and the rapid growth of Turkish football, citing stars such as Victor Osimhen and Leroy Sané.
Although Zaniolo does not know Leão personally, he expressed genuine sympathy and wished the Portuguese forward continued success and enjoyment in Turkey.
The interview, conducted by Calciomercato, also noted Zaniolo’s earlier stints with Roma, Galatasaray and Turkish football, reinforcing his familiarity with both Mourinho’s methods and the Turkish league’s evolution.
Overall, Zaniolo’s remarks paint a picture of a player who values mentorship from a celebrated manager and respects the achievements of a fellow Portuguese international now plying his trade abroad.
