Young Boys end St. Gallen's two‑decade winless Serie at Wankdorf

Young Boys celebrated a 2‑0 home victory over St. Gallen in the 11th round of the Swiss Super League, finally halting St Gallens Serie in Bern. Coach Gerardo Seoane watched from the stands after a hospital stay for an inner‑ear nerve inflammation.

Red card reshapes the contest

Midway through the second half, Edimilson Fernandes was dismissed after a hard‑fought challenge. Referee Lukas Fähndrich showed a straight red in the 78th minute when Fernandes’ tackle on Lukas Görtler resulted in the ball striking St. Gallen captain. The decision left the visitors with ten men.

Despite having only about 30 percent of possession, the ten‑man St. Gallen grew more adventurous. Seven minutes from time, defender Cédric Zesiger cleared a low cross, preventing Chima Okoroji from scoring on the line. The Bernese side, however, could not create further chances.

Young Boys had already dictated play in the first half, controlling the tempo and creating the majority of chances. With assistant coach Matteo Vanetta directing from the bench, the Berner side maintained pressure but missed the final touch to seal a larger margin.

Historical context and upcoming fixtures

St. Gallen had not won in Bern for twenty years – a Mal that finally ended last season when the Ostschweizer celebrated three victories at Wankdorf, twice against Young Boys and once in a cup final versus Stade‑Lausanne‑Ouchy. This season’s encounter offered no reward.

Elsewhere in the Super League, FC Zürich edged Luzern 2‑1 at home while Servette matched the scoreline against promoted Vaduz. Looking ahead, St. Gallen host Servette on Saturday, and Young Boys will welcome FC Zürich at the Wankdorf the following day.

Defender Lewin Blum signed a new deal until 2029, extending his stay after a season on loan at Charleroi. The 25‑year‑old, who has amassed 149 competitive appearances for Young Boys, missed the St. Gallen match due to a yellow‑card suspension.
