Younes Ebnoutalib chooses Germany – Morocco reacts angrily

In the harsh glare of the Frankfurt stadium lights, Younes Ebnoutalib's DFB nomination is in focus, while a disappointed Morocco fan protests in the background. The 23‑year‑old Eintracht Frankfurt striker has chosen the German national team, which sparks discontent in his father's homeland. The decision was personally backed by national team coach Jürgen Klopp.

Klopp convinces the striker

Jürgen Klopp presented his first squad selection as national coach, naming 44 professionals for four Nations League matches at the end of September and the beginning of October. Among the newcomers, the 23‑year‑old Younes Ebnoutalib, striker of Eintracht Frankfurt, is the biggest surprise. Klopp visited the player personally in Frankfurt and said: “I saw his first game for Frankfurt and thought: Where did they get him from? His style of play, his willingness, his cleverness on the final line, is extraordinary.”

The Moroccan federation had campaigned intensively for the forward and even sent an official invitation to the Africa Cup qualification, although Ebnoutalib had already declined. Morocco national team coach Mohamed Ouahbi expressed disappointment and remarked sarcastically: “We are sixth in the world ranking and we keep going.” Germany currently sits at twelfth place, but Klopp wants to turn the tide.

Possible internationals and lock‑out period

Ebnoutalib could celebrate his Nations League debut already against the Netherlands on 24 September in Amsterdam or against Greece on 27 September in Augsburg. Since he is over 21, he would be permanently tied and could no longer appear for Morocco. The two matches mark the first appearance of the new type of attacking force for the German nation.

A fan video that showed Ebnoutalib's nomination even before the official announcement went viral. Klopp took it with humour and said: “He sent me the video and immediately apologised that it slipped out. I only see a boy who is thrilled to be part of it.”

The controversy highlights how strongly DFB decisions are perceived in countries with dual heritage. With Ebnoutalib in the squad, Germany sends a signal for talent acquisition, while Morocco aims to defend its position in the world ranking.
