Xavi starts strongly with the Oranje, 1‑1 against Germany and a hopeful outlook

In the Johan Cruijff Arena, Xavi Hernández was seen on the sidelines of the Netherlands for the first time, while Cody Gakpo scored the equaliser in injury time after a superb cross from debutant Ruben van Bommel. The match ended 1‑1 against Germany, with a chance ratio of 22‑10 (8‑2 on target) in favour of the Dutch side. © Pim Ras

Xavi's first impression

Xavi said after the match that he is “satisfied”, but emphasized that this is “just the beginning”. He praised the character, the energy and the attacking intent of the Netherlands, but pointed to too many lost duels and the need for more personality on the pitch. “We must become better in the duels,” he declared, while describing the pressing as a new element of play.

Gakpo's equaliser

Cody Gakpo scored in injury time, after Ruben van Bommel delivered a perfect right‑footed cross. The goal came after striker Brian Brobbey had already been injured after half an hour, a loss that Xavi later described as “a big disappointment”. Gakpo expressed displeasure about the behaviour of the German players at the opening goal, which he said were “unsporting”.

Defensive moments

Virgil van Dijk saw a header in the thirteenth minute disallowed because Brian Brobbey was blocking goalkeeper Marc‑André ter Stegen. Later a goal from Mexx Meerdink was not confirmed by the VAR, after which Van Dijk said he “deserved at least a point”. The Dutch attack received an extra boost from Crysencio Summerville and Tijjani Reijnders.

Team selection and system

Xavi retained many names from his predecessor Ronald Koeman, but introduced a four‑back system instead of the previous five‑back system. The basic squad included, among others, Quinten Timber, who replaced the injured Frenkie de Jong, and Tijjani Reijnders, who started ahead of Nathan Aké. After Brobbey's injury, Xavi indicated that he will soon call up a new striker.

Upcoming Nations‑League‑duels

The Netherlands still have three internationals in this Nations‑League period: against Serbia in Belgrade, against Greece in Thessaloniki and again against Serbia in Eindhoven. These matches constitute the next test for Xavi's building project.

Future outlook

Van Dijk remained optimistic and called the result “a fine pot” after three days of work. Xavi concluded with the words that there is “much more to come” and that this “is the beginning”. The positive feeling after the debut paints a hopeful start for the Netherlands under their new head coach.
