Xavi’s four‑year deal fuels fresh debate over Reiziger’s future role
Spanish tactician Xavi Hernández will address the Dutch press for the first time on Tuesday as the newly appointed national team manager of the Netherlands, having signed a four‑year contract that immediately fuels speculation about former international Michael Reiziger’s possible future as his successor.
Criticism and visual perception
It is a public secret that Michael Reiziger was among the candidates for the job. The outside world reacted sharply, but KNVB director Nigel de Jong told , “You may always have criticism from football content, I also think that’s normal, that’s also why we are Dutch. But it’s not always given to call from a visual image of the outside whether someone is or is not a candidate for the national team manager role.”
De Jong also explained that the KNVB still has ambitious plans with the current coach of Jong Oranje. “We brought him in three years ago for a number of reasons. One: to develop him. But also two, because we saw a serious candidate in him as a potential national team manager. That’s how we always treated him,” the former international said.
He added that despite the choice of Xavi, Reiziger remains highly regarded in Zeist. “To this day I hold Michael very highly. He knows that. We had that conversation. We still have belief in Michael, that he can become a successful coach and a possible national team manager in the future,” De Jong emphasized.

Future succession after Xavi
Should Xavi’s tenure end prematurely or after the four‑year term, Reiziger could be considered for the Netherlands job, although several conditions apply. He might be unavailable due to commitments with Ajax, FC Barcelona or PSV, or there could be other candidates deemed more suitable.
A fan wrote on X, “Reiziger does not perform as national team manager at Jong, shows very poor play and has no experience as a club coach. That you even see him as a candidate is a disgrace.”
Another supporter added, “Reiziger will get that position. It’s sad to say, but after Seedorf and de Jong he would be the third person of colour to hold an important role at the KNVB based on skin colour, not on his CV or qualities as you would expect.”
The contrast between Xavi’s high‑profile appointment and the lingering debate over Reiziger’s suitability highlights the Netherlands’ concerns about continuity and the criteria for future leadership of the national side.
